The night of nights. The one everyones been waiting for. Now, the way I've said that... it's supposed to be a joke, but it's closer to the truth than I'd like to admit. Around 925,000 people tuned into the first episode of Ten's new reality show 'Being Lara Bingle'. I'm bit embarrassed to say that I was one of them. Ten's been flogging it for months (or at least what seemed like it) in its cross promotional advertising. But was it really worth all the hype...
No. I don't know who to feel more sorry for. Me, because pain and psychological torment endured over the half an hour broadcast. Or Lara, for such a poor management decision.
This show has no substance. The day-to-day of a C-grade celebrity is every bit mundane as you or me. Only their's is aired on national television. I'm going to give Lara the benefit of the doubt. Maybe this wasn't purely her decision, or if it was, maybe she didn't have any control in production or editing. Because if she did... well I hope things would've been done differently.
The whole purpose of reality television is to blur the lines between professional Lara Bingle and BLB, or 'real' Lara Bingle. Only thing is, the Lara portrayed in BLB is painfully ditzy. Driving illegally on a suspended licence, standing naked in front of a wall of glass expecting no-one to see; such incidents could easily be avoided with a small capsule of common sense taken daily. But without these 'blonde' moments, there's nothing else to keep the audience vaguely interested.
Now I don't know whether this is a reflection on her, or rather the substandard of Australian reality television. With the first episode falling so far below the hype and expectation, I don't think it'll be around for long. But if you really need a second episode to make up your mind you can catch it 8pm Tuesday (for now) on Channel 10 (but probably 11 in the near future...)
